What Is Islam?

Islam is a religion that believes in one God, called Allah. Muslims, the followers of Islam, believe that the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) is the last messenger of God. They follow the Quran, the holy book of Islam, which contains God’s teachings.

Islam teaches Muslims to live a good life by following God’s guidance and being kind, fair, and peaceful. Muslims practice their faith through the Five Pillars of Islam:

  • Believing in one God (Shahada)

  • Praying five times a day (Salat)

  • Giving to charity (Zakat)

  • Fasting during Ramadan (Sawm)

  • Making a pilgrimage (Hajj) to Mecca if they can

These practices help Muslims stay close to God and live a good life.

Who Are Muslims?

Muslims are people who follow the religion of Islam. They come from many different countries and cultures, but they all share the same faith. They believe in one God, Allah, and follow the teachings of the Quran and the example of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

Muslims strive to live according to Islamic teachings, which emphasize kindness, honesty, and respect for others. These values guide their actions and interactions in everyday life.

Our Fundamentals of Islam Course introduces you to the Five Pillars of Islam, which are the essential acts of worship every Muslim observes. These pillars form the foundation of a Muslim’s faith and practice. Through this course, you will gain a deeper understanding of these principles and their importance in daily life.

  1. Shahada (Faith): The first and most important pillar is the declaration of faith. It’s the simple statement that a Muslim believes in one God, Allah, and that Muhammad (PBUH) is His messenger. By saying this and truly believing it, a person becomes a Muslim.

  2. Salah (Prayer): Salah is the daily prayer that Muslims perform five times a day. It helps Muslims stay connected to Allah throughout the day, showing their devotion and expressing gratitude.

  3. Zakat (Charity): Zakat means giving to those in need. Muslims are required to give a small part of their savings (usually 2.5%) to help the poor and strengthen their community.

  4. Sawm (Fasting): Sawm is the act of fasting during the month of Ramadan. Fasting helps Muslims develop self-control, purify their souls, and feel empathy for those who are less fortunate.

  5. Hajj (Pilgrimage): Hajj is the pilgrimage to Mecca that every Muslim must try to do at least once in their lifetime if they are able. It is a powerful experience of unity, where Muslims come together to worship Allah.

Believing in Allah (God)

Muslims believe in one God, called Allah in Arabic. Allah is the Creator of everything in the universe and has no partners. Believing in Allah is the most important part of being a Muslim. It means trusting in His power, wisdom, and mercy.

Who is Allah? Allah is the one true God in Islam. He is not like humans or any other creation. Allah has no parents, no children, and no beginning or end. Muslims believe that Allah is kind, loving, and forgiving. He created the world and sent prophets, like Muhammad (PBUH), to guide people.

Why do Muslims worship Allah? Muslims worship Allah because He is their Creator and Sustainer. Worshiping Allah shows gratitude for all the blessings He gives. Muslims also worship to seek His guidance, forgiveness, and mercy. By worshiping Allah, Muslims feel closer to Him and follow the path to a good and righteous life.

In Islam, prophets are special people chosen by Allah to deliver His messages and guide humanity. Each prophet was given a divine mission to teach people about Allah’s will and how to live a righteous life. They help explain how to follow Allah’s commands and live in a way that is pleasing to Him.

Prophets are deeply respected and honored in Islam for their role in spreading God’s guidance. This includes figures like Prophet Adam, Noah, Abraham, Moses, Jesus, and Muhammad, who is considered the final prophet. Each prophet brought important teachings to help people live in harmony with Allah’s guidance.

The Quran: The Holy Book

The Quran is the holy book of Islam. It is believed to be the exact word of God, revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) through the Angel Gabriel. Muslims consider the Quran a guide for all aspects of life, offering teachings on how to live, worship, and treat others with kindness and justice.

The Quran is written in Arabic, but it has been translated into many languages so that people around the world can understand its message. It is divided into chapters called surahs, and each chapter contains verses called ayahs. Muslims read and recite the Quran regularly, finding guidance, comfort, and wisdom in its words.

How We Learn from the Quran

At Journey of Quran Academy, we learn from the Quran by reading and studying its verses. The Quran teaches us how to follow Allah’s commands and live a righteous life. By reflecting on its messages, we can understand how to be kind, honest, and fair.

Through our courses, you can listen to Quranic recitations and attend classes to better understand and apply its teachings in your daily life. Our goal is to help you build a strong, personal connection with the Quran.

In Islam, angels are special beings created by God from light. They are invisible to humans and only do what God tells them to do. Unlike people, angels do not have free will, so they are pure and always follow God’s commands perfectly. They do not eat, drink, or sleep. Instead, they spend their time obeying and praising God.

Their Important Roles

Angels have many important roles:

  • Messengers: The Angel Gabriel (Jibril) is the one who brought God’s messages to the prophets, including the Quran to the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

  • Guides and Protectors: Some angels protect and guide people.

  • Recorders: Angels record every good and bad action that people do. These records will be used on the Day of Judgment.

  • Other Roles: Other angels have specific duties, like controlling nature or taking the souls of people when they die.

Life After Death

In Islam, life does not end when we die. There is an eternal life after death, which gives people hope and encourages them to live a good life.

What Happens After We Die? When a person dies, their soul enters a waiting period called Barzakh. The soul waits here for the Day of Judgment. On that day, God will bring everyone back to life and judge them based on their actions in this world. Those who lived good lives and followed God’s teachings will be rewarded, while those who did bad deeds will be punished.

Heaven and Hell

  • Heaven (Jannah): Heaven is a beautiful and peaceful place. It is a reward for those who lived good lives. In Heaven, people will experience endless happiness, peace, and comfort. There will be no pain or sadness.

  • Hell (Jahannam): Hell is a place of punishment for those who disobeyed God. It is a place of fire and suffering that everyone wants to avoid.

Living as a Good Muslim

Living as a good Muslim means following God’s teachings and being kind to others. It’s about making a habit of doing good deeds every day.

Being Kind to Others One of the most important teachings in Islam is to be kind to everyone. This means treating others with respect and compassion, whether they are family, friends, or strangers. Even small acts of kindness, like smiling or offering help, are seen as good deeds.

Doing Good Deeds Every Day Good deeds can be big or small. Helping someone in need, giving to charity, or simply saying a kind word are all considered good deeds. Praying, fasting, and reading the Quran are also good deeds because they bring us closer to God. These actions help us grow spiritually and remind us of our purpose in life.
